|What differentiates The Barkan Method from Bikram or other forms of Hot Yoga?|
The Barkan Method is built on many of the poses and philosophies of Bikram Choudhury and Bishnu Ghosh, but integrates postures from other styles of yoga. Founded by Jimmy Barkan who has been teaching yoga since 1981, he has found that even though consistency is important to measure results, daily variations are necessary to challenge, excite and help students become unlimited in their practice.
|Are classes at Hot Box Yoga a cardio workout?|
Absolutely. Our yoga incorporates many challenging postures that sustain an elevated heart rate.
|What if I'm not flexible?|
You don't have to be flexible to start yoga. The heated room allows tight muscles to stretch with greater ease. In fact the more inflexible you are the more reason you should practice yoga. Yoga is about balancing the mind body and soul, not about flexibility.
|Will I lose weight?|
Yes. With regular practice students find their bodies becoming significantly trimmer and toned. The added bonus is Yoga improves the major systems of the body, increasing health and vitality, which is the best way to lose weight in the long term. Of course a balanced diet should also play an important part.
|Can you eat before class?|
You should come to class on an empty stomach. You should not have food for approx. 2 hours before class. You can drink juice or eat fruits up to 1 hour before class. It is important to come hydrated so make sure to drink water before, during and after class.
|When should I avoid doing hot yoga?|
Hot Yoga is great for most people, however it is contraindicated under the following circumstances.
Pregnancy. Women in their first trimester of pregnancy, unless they have kept up a regular hot yoga practice for at least 6 months, are recommended to stay out of the heated room.
Heart Disease. Those suffering from severe heart disease that limits cardiovascular activity should consult their doctor about being in a heated environment.
Children. It is best that hot yoga is practiced only after the child's sweat glands have developed - usually around a girl's first menstruation or a boy's growth spurt.
|How long are the classes, and do I book in advance?
What should I wear/bring?
The Barkan Method & Power Flow classes are 60 minutes long. There is no need to register in advance. Unless indicated, all classes are on-going and drop-in.
Be prepared to sweat. Wear light, non-restrictive clothing comfortable to stretch in. No shoes are to be worn in the studio. Shower facilities are available for use after class.
Please bring a mat, bottled water & towel (all are available for hire/purchase).
